A Tropical Forest Home in Costa Rica Designed for Tranquility

Hidden among the lush tropical trees of Nosara, Costa Rica, this 605-square-meter residence was conceived as a private retreat where nature is present in every view. A large roof canopy shelters the entire home, allowing the structure to blend discreetly beneath the forest canopy while creating a light and harmonious presence within its natural surroundings.

The house is organized around an inward-facing layout, with its living spaces arranged around a central garden courtyard. This design allows greenery, natural light, and fresh air to penetrate deep into every functional area of the home.

The site is located between two natural streams and surrounded by mature trees. Rather than dramatically altering the landscape, the design team chose to preserve the existing vegetation and incorporate it as an integral part of the architecture.

Two separate building volumes are positioned around the central courtyard, maintaining privacy while preserving a strong sense of connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Exposed concrete surfaces combined with dark steel framing give the residence a strong architectural character. In contrast, extensive use of wood throughout the ceilings, staircases, and interior details introduces warmth and a sense of comfort, softening the overall composition.

Natural light is carefully filtered through operable shutters and sun-shading elements. Throughout the day, shifting patterns of light and shadow animate the walls, floors, and ceilings, creating an atmosphere that feels both dynamic and serene. Living areas are fully opened to the outdoors, with the living room, dining area, and kitchen all enjoying uninterrupted views of the surrounding greenery, effectively blurring the boundary between inside and outside.

Natural ventilation was prioritized over mechanical cooling systems. Through thoughtful spatial planning and the region's favorable climate conditions, the home remains comfortable and well-ventilated while minimizing dependence on air conditioning.

The material palette primarily consists of locally sourced materials, reinforcing the project's connection to its environmental context. Every surface, texture, and color was selected to evoke a sense of relaxation, balance, and harmony with nature. According to the design team, the objective was not to create a visually dominant architectural statement, but rather a place where residents could slow down, appreciate the changing light, feel the breeze, and reconnect with nature as part of everyday life.

With its open architecture, natural materials, and deep respect for the existing landscape, the residence offers an alternative vision of luxury—one defined not by scale or spectacle, but by tranquility, simplicity, and a meaningful connection to the surrounding environment.
